Denver zoo shuts down early over the weekend to stop teens from attempting a TikTok-inspired 'takeover'

The Denver Zoo decided to close its gates early on Saturday to preempt a planned “takeover” by teenagers, which had gained traction on TikTok. This incident is part of a broader trend where young people engage in disruptive behavior in public spaces across the nation.

The zoo staff made this decision as a precaution against what they termed “acquisition.” They weren’t exactly sure how the event would unfold, but, well, they wanted to avoid the chaos that had occurred at similar gatherings elsewhere this summer.

Zoo spokesperson Jake Cuby mentioned, “We lack details about this specific event, but prior incidents of this nature have led to disruptions, property damage, and vandalism.” He added that they were not explicitly warned about anything targeting the zoo, but they believe in staying vigilant.

Just last weekend, there was a similar incident at Northfield Mall in Denver, where over 300 unruly teenagers clashed in fights after being prompted to gather through TikTok.

Even with the zoo’s early closure, there seemed to be a semblance of calm among the staff. However, concerns lingered. Advocates and police patrolled Denver’s City Park as a safety measure, just to be cautious as the afternoon unfolded.

Meanwhile, over on the East Coast, teenagers in New Jersey were also facing scrutiny. In a span of just one week, several TikTok-driven events led to teenagers shutting down malls and carnivals.

In Edison, for instance, more than 300 youths transformed Menlo Park Mall into their own playground, forcing the evacuation of shoppers amid rising tensions. The following week, another chaotic event disrupted a carnival happening just down the road. Even when the carnival tried to enforce an age limit outside business hours, groups of teens began climbing the fences to get in.
