Deonte Banks’ Comeback Efforts
Deonte Banks seems to be at a crossroads, perhaps needing to reevaluate his situation once more. The former first-round draft choice has struggled over the past couple of seasons, but he’s beginning to show glimpses of the talent that made him a top pick during this year’s Giants training camp, especially under the guidance of new defensive coordinator Denard Wilson.
That said, practice performance isn’t everything—real success has to translate into games. In Saturday’s nail-biting 13-10 preseason defeat against the Vikings, Banks started and participated in 23 defensive snaps, though he did incur two illegal contact penalties, one of which was negated.
He also managed to return a kickoff for 27 yards. Reflecting on the penalties, Banks remarked, “I think my vision just wasn’t great in the first place. For the second one, well, I’m not the referee, so…”
It’s clear that among all the players on the team, Banks might have needed a fresh start more than anyone else. His mental state appeared to have plummeted last season, as he completely sat out on defense during the final two weeks.
“They really gave me a reset,” he shared. “This scheme feels like a good match for me. I’m enjoying it.” Banks appreciates Wilson’s energetic approach, emphasizing how he’s encouraged to be himself and excel in his role—being aggressive and consistent.
In the game against the Vikings, Banks didn’t allow a single catch and made two tackles, including one early in the game on fullback Max Bredeson. This level of effort stands in stark contrast to what he exhibited in prior years.
“I’ve always had confidence, but now I’m just eager to compete and do what needs to be done,” Banks stated. “I’m focused on moving forward and putting my best foot forward.”
During training camp, he’s been rotating with the starting players, as the Giants work on improving their cornerback lineup, which has faced some challenges due to injuries affecting preseason starters like Paulson Adebo and Greg Newsome II.
Is this a turning point for Banks? His previous contract was let go when the Giants declined his fifth-year option. “Yes, this could definitely be significant,” he acknowledged. “I’m sure of it.”
In another development, Vikings safety Jamal Adams sustained a knee injury without contact and had to be carted to the locker room, prompting concerns about the state of the playing surface at MetLife Stadium.
“The initial indicators certainly don’t look good,” stated a visibly upset head coach Kevin O’Connell, who noted he wouldn’t jump to conclusions until further evaluations are conducted.
Many expected starters, including OLB Brian Burns, WR Malik Nabors, and others, sat out in this game for various reasons.
On the special teams front, WR Braxton Berrios took on the role of primary punt returner, returning twice for 30 yards, while joining Banks as a kickoff returner.
In the kicking game, Ben Sauls successfully converted a PAT and a 46-yard field goal, while Dominic Zvada enters the competition as the race for a starting kicker heats up.
