Deonte Banks Impresses During Giants Training Camp

The ball soared through the air, intended for Onedale Robinson but slightly misthrown by Russell Wilson. It’s a scenario that can be tricky for Deonte Banks, but this time, he executed well.

The third-year cornerback read the play astutely, positioning himself perfectly. He followed the ball, accelerated, and made a smooth interception. Overall, it was a better day for Banks, who has had a somewhat inconsistent summer.

Banks and Cor’dale Flott are currently recognized as co-starters on the initial depth chart released by the Giants. Despite Banks being the first-round pick in 2023, the front office has made it clear that he won’t be given any guarantees after a challenging second season in the NFL.

During practice, Banks and Flott took turns with first-team defensive snaps, although Flott’s participation has been limited due to a minor injury this week. This development allowed Banks to slide ahead in their competition for the starting position, putting pressure on veteran Paulson Adebo.

Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen expressed appreciation for both players, noting how competition benefits them. “They both do a really good job,” he said, indicating his support for Banks’ growth and competitive spirit.

In one drill, tight end Theo Johnson managed to make a catch on Banks, who reacted by clapping his hands together, acknowledging the play without hindering the completion. Later, Banks showcased his defensive skills against Jalin Hyatt on a deep route, successfully defending multiple passes.

Bowen commented on Banks’ commitment, stating that the cornerback continues to work hard and compete vigorously for his position. “He’s trying to win it,” Bowen added, reflecting on Banks’ dedication throughout training camp.

Wilson Eager for Upcoming Preseason Game

In other news, it’s evident that Russell Wilson is looking forward to playing in the upcoming preseason opener against Buffalo. “I always want to be with my teammates,” he stated, expressing his readiness regardless of what the decision is.

Things got a bit heated during practice when defensive lineman DJ Davidson continued his efforts a bit too far down the field, leading to some friction with running back Jonathan Ward.

Meanwhile, safety Makari Paige experienced a moment of frustration as he failed to intercept a pass that deflected off tight end Thomas Fidone II, punishing himself with push-ups on the grass afterward.
