Deported child abuser violently attacked ICE agent during arrest in Houston.

A Salvadoran man, Walter Leonel Pérez Rodríguez, who has been deported twice, assaulted an ICE officer in Houston while resisting arrest, resulting in serious injuries, including burns and deep cuts to the officer’s face. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that during an operation on Monday, Pérez Rodríguez used a metal coffee cup to attack the officer, leading to 13 stitches being required for his injuries.

This incident coincides with a concerning trend, as assaults on DHS law enforcement officials have reportedly increased by 1,000 percent. Pérez Rodríguez initially entered the U.S. illegally over 15 years ago. A dismissal order was issued against him by an immigration judge in June 2013, after which he was deported. However, he illegally re-entered the country at an unspecified time and was deported again in February 2020. Beyond the repeated unlawful entry, he has a criminal history that includes sexual assault of a minor, child fondling, and multiple DUI offenses.

Currently, he is in ICE custody and is described as “no longer posing a threat to the American public.” Tricia McLaughlin, DHS Assistant Secretary, commented on the situation, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to ensuring that those who attack ICE agents will be held accountable under the law.

This event follows a significant operation in Houston, where federal and state authorities arrested over 1,500 individuals, including serious offenders such as felons and members of gangs. Brett Bradford, the ICE Removal Operations Field Office Director, noted that the operations are becoming increasingly hazardous due to violent and misleading political discourse surrounding their work.

In total, the recent operation resulted in the arrests of 1,505 undocumented individuals, including organized crime members and repeat offenders. Despite facing these challenges, Bradford asserted that their efforts are crucial in preventing further violent crimes in the community.

ICE has conducted several large-scale operations throughout the year, arresting hundreds of individuals in various sweeps, including a notable one in August that led to 822 arrests.
