Texas Deputies Injured in Crash
Two deputies from the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office were injured on Monday morning, according to officials.
The incident involved the deputies becoming trapped between their vehicle and a guardrail on I-27. Deputy Director Andrew Cavazos, 49, was seen hanging from a concrete barrier on the elevated 98th Avenue. Prior to the crash, Cavazos and his partner, Jorge Martinez, 36, had parked their cruiser to manage traffic while a driver changed a tire.
Witnesses at a nearby gas station quickly jumped in to assist the deputies, with one bystander recalling, “I heard the crash. Someone hit the cruiser and slammed two guys into the wall. We saw it and rushed over to help.” They managed to provide crucial support until police arrived.
Lubbock County Sheriff Kelly Lowe noted in a briefing that the truck driver was attempting to connect a Bluetooth device and failed to notice the deputies in time, leading to the collision. The semi-truck driver, Gregory Voort, 57, was also taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, as reported by KCBD 11.
Fortunately, both deputies were released from the hospital the day after the incident. They expressed deep appreciation for the assistance they received from bystanders. “Thank you for helping my partner when I couldn’t reach him,” Martinez stated. Cavazos added, “I really appreciate everyone who came to my aid. Without you, things could have been much worse.”
The major crash units of the Lubbock Police Department are currently investigating, and there are no charges filed at this moment.
