Deputy Director of the U.S. Secret Service Matthew Quinn Stepping Down: 'A Difficult Choice'

Matthew Quinn, the Deputy Director of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS), is stepping down from his position, indicating that plans for his transition have been in place for quite a while.

On Friday, Quinn announced his decision, stating he wants to spend more time with his family, according to NewsNation.

“Today I informed the men and women of the @SecretService that I will be transitioning out of my role as Deputy Director. Director Curran and I have been working on a thoughtful transition plan for months now. I’m proud of the accomplishments of the men and women of the USSS!” he shared in a post on social media.

The outlet acquired a letter addressed to agency employees, where Quinn detailed that his objective from the start of his 18-month tenure was to “work myself out of this job as quickly as possible,” emphasizing that he thinks now is the right moment to leave.

Quinn also noted that “This was not an easy decision.”

“Quinn returned from retirement at the personal request of Secret Service Director Sean Curran,” the NewsNation article noted. “He expressed pride in transforming the agency’s leadership team and enhancing law enforcement staffing during his time.”

In July, Curran discussed the challenging threat landscape during a news briefing, as reported by ABC News.

“The numbers at this agency, and honestly, I’ve never seen anything like it in my 24-year career; they’re off the charts. The environment has become very volatile, affecting our protectees and local officials alike. The threat picture is broader and more intense than I’ve ever witnessed,” he remarked.

This week, Quinn highlighted that the agency had achieved a net gain of nearly 930 law enforcement personnel in 2026, which represents a significant 722 percent increase.

Quinn’s resignation comes amid scrutiny of the U.S. Secret Service in connection with assassination attempts on President Donald Trump, who has survived three such incidents.

In October 2025, Breitbart News reported on a RealClearPolitics article discussing how former President Joe Biden’s administration had focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices, amidst other problematic issues, including the case of a plus-size agent.

Several months later, a U.S. Secret Service agent who was part of Vice President JD Vance’s protective detail was reportedly placed on administrative leave and had his clearance suspended after allegations surfaced that he shared sensitive operational information with someone he believed was a romantic interest, according to the agency and multiple reports.
