Derek Fisher’s Take on LeBron James’ Legacy with the Lakers

Former Laker Derek Fisher feels that LeBron James hasn’t received the appreciation he deserves from Lakers fans. “It’s tough to dictate how fans should feel,” he shared with the California Post. “To celebrate his exit feels a bit exaggerated. Honestly, what were the expectations besides winning multiple championships? Since 2018, only the Warriors have really managed to do that.”

LeBron signed with the Lakers in 2018, having already won two titles with the Heat and one with the Cavaliers. He played a significant role in revitalizing the Lakers, especially after a stretch where the team missed the playoffs for six years. In 2020, just his second year with the Lakers, he led them to a championship, their first in a decade.

After James decided to move on earlier this month, ending an eight-season tenure—his longest stint at any franchise—Fisher was taken aback by the fans’ response, which he found celebratory.

“I’m not sure why he didn’t fulfill some expectations,” Fisher remarked. “He brought us to the playoffs, won a title, and made a deep playoff run last season. The Lakers’ brand remains strong. So, I find the reaction puzzling.”

Fisher wonders why there seems to be a disconnect between James and the fans. He attributes this to the comparisons made between James and Lakers legends like Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson, each of whom won five championships and spent their entire careers—20 and 13 seasons, respectively—within the organization.

James didn’t grow up with the Lakers. Before joining at 33, he had spent 15 seasons in the Eastern Conference and had already established himself as one of basketball’s greatest.

“He shouldn’t be compared to Kobe or Magic,” Fisher stated. “They’re different players with different journeys. Given how the organization was struggling when he arrived, we should appreciate what he contributed.”

Changes began for James when the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic in February 2025. Doncic quickly became the focal point for the team.

When asked if the Lakers have treated James with the respect he merits, Fisher hesitated. “I’m not sure,” he replied. “Maybe he felt it was time to move on after eight good seasons, especially with a new franchise player in town. Perhaps there’s no deeper reason to it all.”

“I don’t think there was any negative fallout. Sometimes, circumstances just change,” he added.

As an unrestricted free agent, James has yet to announce his next destination, with Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, Philadelphia, and Minnesota being potential options.

When asked where he hopes James ends up, Fisher was candid. “As a basketball fan, I’d love to see him play alongside Steph Curry,” he expressed. “I’m not sure if it’s even feasible, but they’d create something special together. And, with players like Draymond Green and Al Horford, they would just have fun on the court.”

“Honestly, I wouldn’t care if they won 60 games or 40; I think they’d be entertaining to watch.”
