Possible Sequel to “My Best Friend’s Wedding”
Dermot Mulroney has officially announced that a sequel to the beloved 1997 romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding” is in the works.
However, he admitted, “I don’t know much about it. The last thing I heard was that the lawyer was talking about it,” while promoting his upcoming Netflix show “The Hunting Wives.”
The original film followed Mulroney’s character, Michael O’Neill, and his friend Julian “Juul” Potter, played by Julia Roberts, who is a food critic based in New York City.
Unfortunately for Julian, Michael informs her that he is marrying Kimmy Wallace, portrayed by Cameron Diaz. Realizing her feelings for Michael, Julian attends the wedding with her gay friend George, played by Rupert Everett, pretending to be his fiancée.
The film, directed by PJ Hogan, ends on a bittersweet note as Julian acknowledges Michael’s happiness with Kimmy, with George there to support her.
Recalling his experience on set, 61-year-old Mulroney said, “Oh, it was all a dream.” He remembered auditioning with Julia Roberts, noting there were many others vying for the same role. “I knew—everyone in Hollywood knew—that it would be an extraordinary film.”
Mulroney cherishes his lasting friendship with Julia and his strong connection with Rupert and Cameron during the filming process. He remarked, “You can make a truly tragic dramatic film and still have a blast doing it.”
Reflecting on his time in Chicago filming “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” he mentioned, “I’ve been back many times. Those memories are just coming back to me. It was an important chapter in my life.”
He added, “It truly was a life-changing experience, and that’s hard to put into words.”
The film’s cast reunited for a feature in 2019 with Entertainment Weekly. Julia Roberts shared that she found the entire experience witty and authentic, highlighting a specific line that resonated with her: “Pick me. Let’s make you happy,” describing it as concise, sweet, and meaningful.
Cameron Diaz, reflecting on the journey, said working with such a talented group, especially Julia, was a significant opportunity for her.
“My Best Friend’s Wedding” opened with $21 million and ultimately grossed around $127 million in the domestic box office.
