Dershowitz says Hur report ‘a disaster,’ ‘unfair to both sides’

Former Trump lawyer and law professor Alan Dershowitz on Monday denounced the special counsel’s report into President Biden’s handling of classified documents as a “disaster” and “unfair to both sides.”

Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report cleared Biden of wrongdoing, but also noted his age and cognitive health. Mr. Hsu said that during his interrogation, Mr. Biden gave the impression that he was a “well-intentioned elderly man with a poor memory,” a characterization that Mr. Biden has actively pushed back against.

“This report itself is a disaster on both counts. This was unfair to both sides,” Dershowitz, who represented former President Trump in his first impeachment trial, told Fox News on Monday. said in an interview.

He compared the situation to the criminal case faced by President Trump and argued that Mr. Hsu should have found Mr. Biden criminally responsible for keeping classified documents. But Dershowitz also defended Biden over the attacks on his memory.

“I think this report will cause us to think seriously about the role of the special counsel. He was wrong in every way he might have done,” he said.

“It was a mistake not to indict Mr. Biden. Mr. Biden should have been indicted, Mr. Trump should have had his case dismissed, and the type of medical diagnosis that gives political influence to the case was a mistake. It was wrong to do so,” he continued.

Other legal experts have suggested that the Biden and Trump classified documents lawsuits are quite different, in part because Trump has refused to cooperate with returning documents he took to his Florida home. There is.

Mr. Hsu also pointed out this point in his report.

“It is clear that there are some key differences between Mr. Trump’s case and Mr. Biden’s case. Unlike the evidence against Mr. Biden, the allegations set forth in Mr. Trump’s indictment have not been proven. “This would seriously exacerbate the situation,” he wrote.

“Most notably, despite being given multiple opportunities to return classified documents and avoid prosecution, Mr. Trump allegedly did the opposite.”

Overall, the former Harvard law professor gave the report a D grade, calling it “significantly inflationary.”

Mr. Hur is a former federal prosecutor in Maryland who was appointed by President Trump in 2018. He resigned upon Biden’s inauguration, which is standard for federal prosecutors. Mr. Biden’s lawyer, Bob Bauer, suggested that the pursuit of Mr. Biden was aimed at strengthening Mr. Xu’s own employment prospects in a future Trump administration.
