Des Moines School Board Chair Running for Senate Advocates for 'Radical Empathy' Toward Undocumented Individual Appointed as School Superintendent

Jackie Norris, chair of the Iowa State School Board in Des Moines, has called for “radical sympathy” towards Michelle Obama, former chief of staff and Democratic candidate for the Iowa Open Senate seat.

According to reports, Roberts was taken into custody by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) after facing pre-arrest on gun charges and a final deportation order.

During the arrest, ICE discovered $3,000 in cash, loaded handguns, and a hunting knife in the vehicle issued to Roberts.

Following Roberts’ arrest, Norris appealed to the community, parents, and teachers to “engage in radical empathy” for him, despite allegations that he misrepresented his legal status and work eligibility due to his lack of U.S. citizenship.

“It seems appropriate to draw from Dr. Roberts’ example and invite the community to respond with radical empathy while we navigate this situation together,” Norris mentioned in a statement.

Empathy is recognizing our differences while still being able to sympathize with one another. This respect for each other’s humanity is vital as we await further information. [Emphasis added]

Norris noted that board members were not informed of Roberts’ immigration-related issues, diverting the school board’s responsibility. She emphasized the need for the public and officials to “tone down the rhetoric.”

Roberts is currently on paid leave while in custody.

“We must foster honest discussion and factual information instead of spreading divisive misinformation. Elected leaders should model appropriate behavior for children… after all, they’re watching us,” Norris added.

For her Senate campaign, Norris released a fundraising video on X, explaining the need for donations, stating, “I couldn’t focus on politics or fundraising due to the pressing matters I faced as I volunteered as chair of the Des Moines School Board.”
