Florida Governor Orders Dismantling of Immigration Detention Center

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has directed his administration to dismantle operations at Alligator Alcatraz, the immigration detention center located in the Everglades.

“We anticipated this outcome, and we’ll adapt accordingly,” the governor stated during a news conference.

DeSantis has been a strong supporter of former President Trump’s immigration policies and efforts for deportation. State officials claim they are actively aiding in processing and managing immigration.

On Thursday, US District Judge Kathleen Williams, appointed by former President Obama, ruled that Florida must halt the expansion of Crocodile Alcatraz and the installation of additional lighting.

She also mandated the removal of all generators, gas, sewage systems, and other waste containers related to the project within a 60-day timeframe.

In her detailed 82-page ruling, Williams asserted that the project causes irreversible harm by destroying habitats and increasing mortality rates among local endangered species.

Furthermore, the Wannial Catraz limits access for Mikkoski members to their land. Nevertheless, despite the judicial challenges, citing these concerns, DeSantis expressed his intention to contest the ruling.

“We won’t be deterred. We believe we are absolutely correct on this matter, though there are additional demands for the success of Wani Alcatraz,” he told reporters.

“In light of this, we plan to establish another facility just outside Jacksonville in Baker County, which we’re calling a deportation depot.”

The new site is projected to accommodate around 2,000 individuals once completed. DeSantis recently announced that the Baker Correctional Facility, located approximately 43 miles west of downtown Jacksonville, will be upgraded to assist with federal immigration enforcement.

DeSantis seems to be bolstering immigration operations, and he indicated that Croni Alcatraz would remain a key part of the state’s strategy.

“I anticipated her decision the moment this judge received the case,” DeSantis remarked on Friday.

“This wasn’t a surprise, but we’re committed to completing our objectives despite the challenges.”
