Tragic Crocodile Attack in Puerto Vallarta

The victim of a fatal crocodile attack in Puerto Vallarta has been identified. Irving Mauricio, a 28-year-old from Mexico City, lost his life on Friday night while at a popular beach in the resort area, witnesses and officials reported. A family from San Clemente, vacationing in the area, attempted to help him during the harrowing incident.

The attack took place at Marina Vallarta Beach, not far from the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa, around 6:30 p.m. Local authorities discovered Mauricio’s body early Saturday morning, approximately 12 hours after the tragedy.

Claudia Mauricio, the grieving mother, expressed her profound sorrow in an online message. She lamented the loss of her son, asking for strength to carry on and seeking his forgiveness for not being able to protect him as she wished. Mauricio is also survived by his father, Ross, and younger brother, Alexis.

“If I have failed you as a mother, please forgive me,” she wrote. “I will never stop loving you. If you loved me that much, I want you to know that I love you a thousand times more, my little Irving Mauricio.” She concluded her emotional note with the hope of reuniting with her son in the afterlife.

Mauricio’s body was found near a bar across from the hotel, apparently pulled under by the crocodile. The search, which included efforts on land, at sea, and in the air, culminated in the discovery of his remains around 7 a.m. on Saturday. The body was located 500 meters offshore, raising questions about how he ended up in the water.

Puerto Vallarta’s Civil Protection and Fire Chief, Misael López Muro, remarked that authorities are investigating the horrific attack. Currently, search and rescue operations are ongoing, and they have captured a crocodile measuring around 3.7 meters in the same area. Forensic tests are being conducted to determine if this particular reptile was involved in the incident.

Witnesses described hearing screams while enjoying their time by the hotel pool. One tourist, Jamie Yetter, mentioned thinking someone was caught in a rip current, prompting her fiancé to rush toward the beach. The rainy season in Jalisco typically sees an increase in crocodile activity, which heightens the risk of such encounters for beachgoers and tourists.

Muro advised local residents and visitors to heed warning signs and to avoid entering waters where crocodiles have been seen, especially in areas lacking supervision. He assured the public that efforts are being made to monitor and educate about the risks associated with crocodiles.

“Fortunately, the body was found, the animal was captured, and the necessary procedures are already underway,” Muro stated. “We are committed to ensuring public safety and regret that this incident occurred.”
