Detective Stabbed in Bronx Robbery Released from Hospital
A detective with the New York City Police Department was discharged from the hospital after sustaining multiple stab wounds during a robbery attempt in the Bronx last week, officials reported.
Detective Jose Mercedes was seen leaving Jacobi Medical Center in Morris Park on Monday, where he stood and walked in front of a group of applauding officers.
“Today, in a remarkable display of strength and determination, Detective Mercedes got up from his wheelchair and walked out of Jacobi Medical Center on his own two feet. Hundreds of NYPD members were there to support him,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch remarked on social media.
The police commissioner emphasized the department’s commitment to assisting Detective Mercedes as he continues to recover, stating that the department’s best detectives would be relentless in tracking down the individuals responsible for the crime.
At the time of the incident, Mercedes was off-duty and was approached by two suspects on an e-bike who attempted to steal his gold chain while he was at his car in the Norwood neighborhood last Friday afternoon.
During the confrontation, Mercedes tried to resist the robbery but was stabbed and slashed seven times. The assailants then fled the scene. Despite his injuries, he pursued them on foot for approximately two blocks before collapsing near East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue.
“Even with serious injuries, Detective Mercedes chased after his attackers on foot,” Tisch noted.
New York City’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited the detective in the hospital shortly after the incident, expressing hope for his swift and full recovery.
As of Monday, the two attackers have not yet been apprehended, according to police reports.
