Police Officer and Children Injured in Brooklyn Shootings
During the Fourth of July weekend, a New York City police detective and four children were hurt in separate shootings in Brooklyn. Detective Robert Carroll, part of the NYPD’s Sex Offender Surveillance Unit, was shot in the back while interacting with an armed 18-year-old in Crown Heights early Sunday morning, confirmed NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Carroll was taken to Kings County Hospital and is expected to recover fully. In a statement, Scott Munro, chairman of the Detective Fund Association, expressed deep concern over the rising violence. “This has to stop,” he said during a press briefing. “Our members are out there day and night, protecting the people of New York City. They deserve respect.” Thankfully, he noted, “There are no funeral plans today.”
On the morning of the incident, officers were parked in an unmarked vehicle near Nostrand Avenue when someone approached unexpectedly. Details surrounding the encounter are unclear, as there was no body-worn camera footage available. Tisch described the shooting as a rapid and unforeseen occurrence.
The violence didn’t end there. Just hours earlier, four children had been injured in a shooting incident at Coney Island, where at least eight people were shot, leading to fatalities including two men, two women, and the four children aged 6 to 14. Most of the injured have stabilized, although a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition.
In this particular incident, three officers exited their vehicle to confront the armed suspect before gunfire erupted, but the suspect was not injured. The police vehicle sustained significant ballistic damage, highlighting the danger on the streets.
Authorities later captured the suspect following a foot chase, but he resisted arrest until officers used a Taser. A 9mm firearm was found in his possession.
Mayor Zoran Mamdani expressed relief that Detective Carroll was wearing a bulletproof vest, stating that he hopes for the detective’s swift recovery. “It’s a relief that he’s alive,” he added, acknowledging Carroll’s role as a family man.
As part of the department’s Fourth of July Violence Reduction Plan, officers had been redeployed to the area just before midnight. Investigators are now looking into nearby businesses for any surveillance footage related to the shooting.
