A Detroit high school teacher was fired after his parents complained to the school that he had a “side job” as a rapper. The former teacher now plans to take legal action against the school, the paper said. daily mail.
Domonique Brown, 32, was reportedly named Taylor Preparatory High School’s Teacher of the Month for December. However, she was fired from her teaching position after her guardian filed an anonymous complaint about Brown’s burgeoning rap career.
“The first person I met with was the dean and the principal, and they just said, ‘Your parents saw your social media and said you’re a bad influence because you’re a rapper.’ ” Brown said. He said.
Parents suggested that a music video in which Brown appeared titled “DRIPPIN 101” may be the cause of the problem. Brown released the video under the rap name “Drippin Honey”. The video became popular, garnering 34,000 views on YouTube and 619 comments.
The music video included explicit language such as “I’m not kidding – I’m the dough guy” and “Motown baby crazy like the ’80s.” A large portion of the video features a group of young people dancing in a parking lot.
But Brown doesn’t think her actions outside the classroom should affect her work as a teacher.
“Unless my outside life interferes with my ability to fulfill my responsibilities as a teacher, it should not be grounds for termination,” Brown wrote under the YouTube video. “My dedication, professionalism, and passion for education have always remained unwavering, regardless of my personal pursuits.”
Despite Brown asking the parents to submit written complaints, the parents never did so.
“I want those parents to come and see the professionalism, see me in the classroom, see me after school, see me at every game, drop off and pick up their kids every day, eat food, etc. I thought, “Can I tell you to look at me buying something?” Mr. Brown said in an interview. WJBK. “Before they say I’m not a professional in my field, can they please come and see me in action?”
Brown said she experienced discrimination after being fired.
“Music is part of the culture,” she said. “We come from Motown and this is what we do. So it’s not like it’s unheard of, it’s the culture. If you’re like me, you understand that a little bit… ”
