The Detroit Lions are turning Jack Campbell’s injury into a rallying point for the rest of the season. Ahead of their game against the Miami Dolphins in South Florida, around six players arrived wearing the linebacker and team captain’s No. 46 jersey.
Others found their own ways to honor him. Aidan Hutchinson carried a gallon jug marked “Jack” into the stadium.
Campbell was taken from the field on a stretcher during Detroit’s win over Minnesota last Sunday after suffering a serious neck injury. Hutchinson was visibly emotional as medical staff treated his teammate on the field.
The Lions have made “play like 46” a focus this week. Linebacker Derrick Barnes said the team’s preparation and effort would be dedicated to Campbell, adding that he hopes his teammate would want them to keep going.
Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, who also wore a No. 46 jersey, urged players to honor Campbell by preparing and playing the way he does.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Campbell said he has full movement in his lower body and is working to regain mobility in his upper body.
