Dexter-inspired New York man convicted of killing and dismembering woman | New York

Federal prosecutors have convicted a New York City man of murdering and dismembering a woman to collect her life insurance money.

A federal jury on Monday sentenced Corey Martin, 36, of Rosedale, Queens, to murder and identity theft after 26-year-old Brandi Odom was strangled in her bedroom in 2018. He was found guilty of a crime.

according to Martin served as a pimp for Odom and his co-conspirators in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. identified In the news, she is reported to be living with him while doing sex work for him as Adele Anderson.

Authorities said Martin and Anderson fraudulently obtained life insurance policies in Odom’s name twice, in March 2017 and December 2017. The two used a Western Union money order and a debit card in Odom’s name to make payments to the life insurance company.

During the trial, Anderson said he and Martin watched the news documentary series “The First 48,” which depicts the actual investigation by homicide detectives during the first 48 hours of a murder investigation. According to U.S. prosecutors, the two discussed “what not to do and what to do to avoid being caught by the police.”

Anderson also testified that Martin had been watching the television series “Dexter,” about a blood-splatter expert who solves murders and simultaneously commits murders and dismembers his victims.

According to Anderson, Martin was “looking for a way to commit a crime when he kicked Brandi out.”

U.S. prosecutors say Martin strangled Odom in his bedroom in April 2018 before going to a Long Island mall with Anderson to buy cleaning supplies. He also searched on his website for Home Depot for a “Dewalt 12 amp corded reciprocating saw” with a “powerful 12 amp motor designed for heavy duty applications.” That night, he searched his YouTube for “how to insert a reciprocating saw blade” and “how to use a reciprocating saw.”

Anderson testified that Martin covered all sides of the bathroom with heavy-duty black trash bags and then used an electric saw to dismember Odom’s body in the bathtub.

A few days later, Martin disposed of Odom’s body parts at Canarsie Park, a 132-acre park in Brooklyn. On April 10, people searched for online news such as “Dismembered body found in Brooklyn’s Canarsie Park, search expands,” and the next day, they searched for “Exclusive interview with mother of baby girl found in park.”

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Anderson then made repeated attempts to claim benefits under Odom’s life insurance policy at Martin’s direction, but were unsuccessful.

Martin could be sentenced to life in prison.

“For this horrific, cold-blooded crime, motivated by greed and carefully planned, it stands to reason that Martin will face a mandatory sentence of spending the rest of his life in prison.” Said Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

“Martin trafficked his victim for money and commercial sex, killed her with his bare hands, and then disposed of her brutally murdered body parts in the garbage in order to profit from her death. I threw it away like that.

“Brandi Odom suffered an unthinkable death at the hands of this defendant, but her life mattered. We hope this judgment, which holds the defendant accountable, brings some closure to her family. ”
