Jonathan Gannon Fined for Sideline Dispute

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon has reportedly been fined $100,000 following a confrontation with running back Emari DeMercado during a game. The tension escalated when DeMercado fumbled the football just before reaching the goal line on what would have been a 72-yard touchdown, which could have put the Cardinals ahead 28-6 in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for Arizona, they ended up losing to the Tennessee Titans in a close match, 22-21.

After the incident, offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. attempted to comfort DeMercado, but Gannon was seen striking DeMercado in the face. This altercation appears to have directly resulted in the hefty penalty for Gannon.

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has voiced his disagreement with the fine, stating, “I don’t agree with the Cardinals fining Coach Gannon $100,000… I think something like this just happened because of the soft world we live in today.” He stressed that athletes should understand the gravity of such situations, implying it’s part of the game to have emotional moments during high-stakes plays. He also expressed concern that this could create tension between Gannon and DeMercado.

In a separate interview, Gannon admitted he felt remorse over the incident. “I woke up this morning and honestly I didn’t feel very well,” he explained. He reflected on how the moment got the best of him, and acknowledged that he needs to maintain control during games. Gannon pointed out that everyone makes mistakes, and that’s part of why they lost.

This fine marks a rare occurrence in the NFL, as it’s reportedly the first time a head coach has been penalized for an altercation with a player since Bruce Arians was fined for a similar incident back when he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
