DHS Imposes Hefty Fines on Illegal Immigrants
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has administered over 100,000 civil penalties, amounting to roughly $84 billion, against undocumented immigrants during the Trump administration. They’ve also managed to collect more than $1 billion in fines, as reported.
Since President Trump took office again about 18 months ago, DHS officials revealed they have issued around 103,000 civil fines totaling approximately $84 billion. By July, the agency had successfully collected close to $1.2 billion in penalties.
Shortly after Trump’s return, his administration stated that undocumented individuals who do not voluntarily leave the country or comply with removal orders would face significant fines—around $998 per day. Notably, undocumented immigrants are required to pay these fines before being deported. DHS has also indicated that it might seize property for those who neglect to pay.
The administration has rolled out several measures to boost the deportation of undocumented immigrants, warning that refusal to self-deport could lead to “significant financial penalties.”
DHS has argued that this program is less costly compared to traditional deportation methods and aims to persuade illegal immigrants to voluntarily exit the U.S.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has disseminated a flyer that details both the “benefits” and “consequences” for those considering self-deportation through the CBP Home app.
The flyer suggests that “Voluntary eviction is safe,” encouraging individuals to select their departure flights at their convenience.
DHS has stated that undocumented immigrants who haven’t committed crimes and leave the U.S. voluntarily can retain the income they earned domestically and may still be eligible for future legal immigration. In some cases, subsidized flights back home might be available for those unable to afford transportation.
However, the flyer also cautions that individuals who fail to self-deport risk immediate arrest by DHS, often without time to manage their personal affairs.
In a report from May, Fox News Digital highlighted that over 3 million undocumented immigrants exited the U.S. during Trump’s first year back in office, with estimates suggesting that about 2.2 million left voluntarily.
As of May 17, DHS announced nearly 900,000 deportations and arrests, indicating a significant shift in immigration patterns under Trump’s policies, especially following record numbers of illegal crossings during Biden’s term.
