Immigration Penalties Under Trump Administration
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has imposed over 100,000 civil fines on illegal immigrants, amounting to around $84 billion since the beginning of Donald Trump’s presidency. Remarkably, they have also managed to collect more than $1 billion in payments, according to reports.
As noted by a DHS official, since Trump’s return to office roughly 18 months ago, fines totaling around $84 billion have been issued. By July, the agency reported collecting about $1.2 billion in these fines.
In response to ongoing issues with illegal immigration, President Trump has cautioned asylum lawyers to be vigilant regarding potential fraud. Shortly after reinstating his position, the Trump administration clarified that undocumented immigrants who do not leave voluntarily or adhere to removal orders face daily fines of $998. Moreover, these immigrants must settle their fines before deportation, and DHS indicated that property seizures could occur for those who don’t comply.
The administration also introduced initiatives aimed at facilitating the deportation process, stressing that those who choose not to self-deport may encounter significant financial penalties. DHS argues that this approach is much more economical compared to conventional deportation methods and urges illegal immigrants to leave the U.S. willingly.
In a related policy, the Trump administration has mandated that green card applicants must exit the U.S. and reapply from their home countries. Meanwhile, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued a flyer that lays out “benefits” and “consequences” for individuals using the CBP Home app for self-deportation. The flyer states that voluntary eviction is safe and advises individuals to use their discretion when choosing a departure flight.
DHS claims that undocumented immigrants leaving voluntarily—especially those without a criminal record—can retain their domestic earnings and even remain eligible for future legal immigration applications. For those unable to afford their trip home, subsidized flights may be an option.
The flyer further cautions that those who do not self-deport risk arrest by DHS without having the chance to prepare beforehand. In a report from May, it was noted that over 3 million illegal immigrants left the U.S. during Trump’s first year in office, with around 2.2 million departing voluntarily, according to DHS statistics.
Additionally, as of mid-May, nearly 900,000 illegal immigrants had been deported, and DHS had made arrests of a similar number. This all paints a picture of how Trump’s strict immigration policies have significantly altered immigration dynamics, particularly in contrast to increased illegal entries under the previous Biden administration.
