Investigation into Rep. Eric Swalwell’s Alleged Hiring Violations
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is looking into California Representative Eric Swalwell for purportedly hiring a Brazilian nanny illegally several years ago, according to officials.
Swalwell is accused of employing a nanny for his children who continued to work for the family even after her work permit expired in 2022, as reported by the New York Post.
Currently, DHS is investigating after the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) referred the case to them, as Politico highlighted.
“USCIS is collecting information regarding Congressman Eric Swalwell’s alleged employment of a Brazilian national as a nanny without proper work authorization,” DHS spokeswoman Lauren Biss confirmed. “These allegations are serious, and USCIS has forwarded the matter to DHS law enforcement for further inquiry.”
Biss also stated, “Federal law prohibits employers from knowingly hiring individuals who are not authorized to work in the United States. No employer, including Congress members, is above the law.”
This inquiry was sparked in February when DHS received a complaint suggesting that the nanny, Amanda Barbosa, “has appeared in numerous social media photos with the Swalwell family from 2023 to 2024, indicating a close relationship and ongoing childcare duties despite lacking legal work authorization.”
In the midst of this situation, Swalwell announced on Sunday that he would pause his gubernatorial campaign in California after facing accusations of sexual misconduct from four women, which include serious allegations like rape.
Additionally, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has begun investigating claims that he sexually assaulted a former employee in a New York City hotel room in April 2024.
“We encourage survivors or anyone with knowledge of these allegations to reach out to the Special Victims Unit,” a spokesperson for the District Attorney’s Office mentioned. “Our specially trained prosecutors, investigators, and counselors are equipped to assist in a survivor-centered and trauma-informed manner.”
