The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is expressing concerns regarding the rhetoric surrounding immigration from the Democratic Party. This follows the arrest of an individual in Oregon who reportedly had a manifesto that included plans to attack U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
An 18-year-old man was detained in St. Helens, near Portland, after police discovered a knife and materials for making Molotov cocktails during a routine traffic stop. His name is Rayden Coleman, and he’s alleged to have not only written a manifesto but also disclosed to investigators his intentions to attack the Portland ICE office with a combination of Molotov cocktails and firearms. He reportedly obtained an AR-15 shortly after formulating his plan.
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of DHS, remarked, “Each day brings more violence, more attempts to harm police officers. Now we have American citizens orchestrating attacks on ICE officers. It’s frightening.”
A recent incident where lawmakers made parallels between ICE and the Gestapo has sparked outrage. During a hearing, Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons pointed fingers at the Trump administration for the deaths of two anti-ICE activists during encounters with immigration officers.
DHS assures that an ongoing investigation related to the events in Oregon is underway. Coleman is currently facing multiple charges, including manufacturing destructive devices, with bail set at $400,000.
There has reportedly been a staggering increase in assaults against ICE officers—over 1,300%—with death threats skyrocketing by approximately 8,000%.
As tensions rise, Democrats are pushing for changes to ICE, warning that they might refuse funding for DHS if their reform requests aren’t addressed. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem commented, suggesting that political maneuvers are being made at the expense of safety and security. “It’s concerning when it feels like there’s little regard for those protecting our country from threats,” she stated.
