Controversy Over ICE Guidance from NYC Mayor-Elect
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem has raised concerns about New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani’s recent video. In it, he provided advice to residents on how to avoid being apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, prompting Noem to suggest that such guidance might be “unconstitutional.”
Noem, appearing on “Hannity,” stated, “If he were the mayor, it could be unconstitutional to give advice on how to evade law enforcement or get away with violating the law.”
Mamdani’s video was shared on Sunday following a reported ICE raid in Manhattan. In his message, he emphasized that his administration would prioritize the protection of immigrant communities while asserting the city’s right to protest.
“As mayor, I will protect the rights of every New Yorker, including the more than 3 million immigrants who call this city home,” he affirmed. “It’s essential to know that we can stand up to ICE if we are informed of our rights.”
He further elaborated on the rights of individuals during encounters with ICE, stating, “First, ICE cannot enter private spaces, such as home, school, or workplace, without a judicial warrant signed by a judge. If they do not have that, you have the right to say, ‘I do not consent to entry,’ and you can keep the door closed.”
Noem did not hold back criticism, highlighting troubling behavior associated with far-left politicians. She warned that violent rhetoric might encourage attacks on ICE agents, citing instances where individuals have confronted these officers with hostility.
“That rhetoric definitely encourages violent attacks,” she reiterated. “In fact, we had a member of Congress assault an ICE law enforcement officer. We had them show up at an ICE facility, harass these officers, and use profane language.”
Noem urged politicians to focus on constructive change, suggesting that if they disagree with existing laws, they should work to change them. “Your job is to debate and craft laws that truly prioritize America,” she said, expressing gratitude that the president is aligning with these priorities.
