DHS promises deportation arrests will keep happening while ICE remains at airports

ICE Operations Continue Amid Funding Issues

A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) mentioned that, even without federal funding, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are proceeding with deportation efforts. They’ve even been deployed to help manage extensive security lines at airports nationwide.

This past weekend, ICE agents captured several dangerous criminals, including child predators, rapists, drug traffickers, and members of the notorious MS-13 gang. Notably, these operations occurred concurrently with ICE officers assisting the understaffed Transportation Security Administration (TSA) across various airport terminals, including those in New York City, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta, and New Orleans.

Tom Homan, who previously served as President Trump’s border czar, stated that ICE officials would maintain an adequate presence at airports until they cannot effectively perform their duties any longer.

Lauren Biss, the DHS Acting Assistant Secretary, expressed her worries regarding ICE’s ability to sustain regular operations while aiding the TSA. She emphasized that ICE wouldn’t allow political opposition to slow down efforts aimed at capturing public safety threats.

Political Responses to DHS Challenges

Biss has called on Congress to conclude their Easter break and take steps to address the shutdown impacting the DHS. Over the weekend, ICE apprehended numerous criminal suspects, with incidents reported in various states.

In the New York area, ICE arrested Pierre Belle, an undocumented immigrant convicted of rape. Meanwhile, at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, agents took Miguel Benitez Campos, a Mexican national previously found guilty of illegal weapon possession.

Harris County, Texas, saw ICE agents apprehend two undocumented individuals, including Jose Santos Vigil Mendez and Jorge Luis Carrera Hernandez, both with serious criminal convictions.

In Alexandria, Virginia, ICE arrested Pedro Antonio Luna, also from El Salvador, who had multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault against minors and family members. This incident raised additional concerns as nearby Fairfax County faced a scandal involving another Salvadoran immigrant accused of similar crimes.

ICE operations also extended to California over the weekend, where six illegal aliens with felony convictions were captured. Among them was Luis Calderon Martinez, identified as an MS-13 gang member with a long criminal history, including drug distribution and violent crimes.

Other significant arrests included Angel Navarro-Camarillo, a registered sex offender, and Higinio Gonzalez Machoro, who was convicted of drug-related rape.

The DHS is presently navigating funding challenges due to ongoing disagreements in Congress about immigration enforcement. While Democrats have proposed reinstating available funds for the department, this assistance is conditional on changes in tactics for ICE and Border Patrol operations.

Call for Immediate Action

Biss urged Democrats to cease what she characterized as political maneuvering and to renew support for the DHS immediately. She expressed appreciation for the ICE personnel’s commitment in assisting airports during these challenging times.

Biss noted that TSA workers should begin to receive pay soon, emphasizing the need for immediate action to ensure safe travel for Americans. As the department continues to face staffing challenges, the collaboration between ICE and TSA is expected to persist as long as necessary according to the directives from the President.
