Department of Homeland Security Responds to Moulton’s ICE Comparisons

The Department of Homeland Security took issue with Rep. Seth Moulton from Massachusetts on Wednesday after he defended individuals who draw parallels between the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Nazi Germany. Assistant Secretary of State Tricia McLaughlin spoke out against these comparisons, stating that such rhetoric only serves to escalate tensions. “This is terrible,” she remarked. “Senator Moulton is deliberately inciting the flames. The vilification of ICE must stop.”

During a CNN interview, Moulton asserted that likening ICE to the Nazi regime isn’t extreme. He articulated his concern about the implications for ordinary Americans, suggesting that similar tactics of targeting specific communities are occurring today. “Essentially, it’s happening here,” he said. Residents in his district share a feeling of vulnerability, fearing they could be next. However, he did not respond to follow-up inquiries.

Interestingly, this isn’t Moulton’s first time making such comparisons. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz had previously likened ICE to the Gestapo, which was the secret police in Nazi Germany, calling ICE, “Donald Trump’s modern-day Gestapo.” This strong language has raised eyebrows and led to significant public discourse.

McLaughlin countered Moulton’s claims, mentioning that such statements could endanger law enforcement and the public. “Obstructing federal law enforcement is a serious crime,” she noted, emphasizing the increasing assaults on ICE agents. McLaughlin defended the agency, stating that ICE officers risk their lives daily to enforce laws against severe offenders, including violent criminals.

She further indicated Moulton should recognize the role of ICE in removing dangerous undocumented individuals from society, showing photos of those recently arrested in Massachusetts for serious offenses like assault and drug trafficking.

The debate around ICE and its practices continues to evoke strong feelings, revealing the complexities of immigration law enforcement and public safety.
