Early Monday morning, the home of Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar was raided by the Department of Homeland Security as part of a criminal fraud investigation focusing on her immigration documentation.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice noted that “Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant.” They clarified that this action is part of an ongoing federal inquiry.
Agents from Homeland Security Investigations were observed outside Omar’s residence in Washington, D.C., according to reports.
Two sources connected to the case indicated that the investigation centers around the immigration paperwork completed by her late father when Omar was a child.
Just weeks prior, Border Czar Tom Homan had disclosed that Omar was involved in an ongoing “criminal” investigation.
Omar has faced persistent allegations suggesting that she married her brother in an effort to help him obtain a U.S. visa or secure student loans. The marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen, took place in 2009 and ended in divorce in 2017.
Moreover, there are claims that she entered the U.S. in 1995 using a false name to evade refugee processing delays, which adds another layer of complexity to her case.
In addition to these serious allegations, Omar has encountered scrutiny regarding potential tax irregularities. A 2019 investigation by Minnesota’s state campaign finance board discovered that she had filed joint tax returns with Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her children, during 2014 and 2015—while still legally married to Elmi.
Omar has persistently denied the claims that Elmi is her brother, labeling them as unfounded prejudice. She has stated that she and Hirsi entered into a religious marriage in 2002, but separated before her legal marriage to Elmi in 2009. According to her, she and Elmi separated again in 2011, and she later reconciled with Hirsi.
The legal divorce from Elmi was finalized in 2017. In May, JD Vance reported that the DOJ and immigration authorities were examining possible instances of immigration fraud and family financial disclosures, following a revision in Omar’s federal financial disclosures that updated the values of reported assets.
The Homeland Security Investigations unit is tasked with a wide array of issues, including cross-border crime, global threats, human trafficking, child sexual exploitation, drug smuggling, and cybercrime.
As of now, no formal criminal charges or court filings have been made against Omar, and her legal representatives assert that her naturalization and financial disclosures are in full compliance with federal regulations.
The Department of Homeland Security has been contacted for additional details regarding the raid.
