Dispute Between Homeland Security Secretary and Minnesota Governor

Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem recently criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz regarding his handling of the 2020 riots in Minnesota. Noem, who was previously the governor of South Dakota, defended the Trump administration’s decision to deploy thousands of National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles, citing Minnesota as an example of what happens under “bad governors.”

“As the governor of a neighboring state, I saw him let his city burn,” Noem told reporters. She mentioned that she and President Trump had discussed the situation, emphasizing that they wouldn’t allow a similar outcome in another city due to poor leadership.

Waltz, who became Minnesota’s governor in 2019, guided the state through the unrest that followed the death of George Floyd in 2020. He expressed pride in Minnesota’s response, praising the cooperation of firefighters, police, and citizens. “I’m proud of our first responders who stood by during that time,” he said during a discussion in 2022.

However, Waltz’s office has yet to respond to inquiries regarding Noem’s comments. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has decided to send around 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to assist in Los Angeles amid protests related to recent ICE arrests in the area.

Trump has clashed with California Governor Gavin Newsom over military operations, asserting that troops are necessary to prevent chaos in Los Angeles. In contrast, Newsom contended that most of the National Guard were stationed in federal buildings without any active orders. He raised concerns that the deployment violated state sovereignty, as governors typically oversee National Guard forces.

Newsom indicated that the military presence was more about catering to Trump’s ego than ensuring public safety, stating, “This is not about public safety.” Instead, it’s about fulfilling the dangerous ambitions of the president.
