Denial of Access for DHS Secretary in Broadview
On Friday, Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, revealed that she and her team were not allowed entry into a government building near Chicago.
In a post, Noem mentioned they were denied access to the Broadview Municipal Building, situated around 12 miles west of downtown Chicago. This incident reportedly stems from the federal treatment of Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
Noem expressed her frustration, saying, “My team and I were prevented from accessing the village of Broadview Municipal Building in Illinois. We were stopped for a simple bathroom break. This is a public building, and Broadview receives over a million dollars from federal funds each year. This is how JB Pritzker and his colleagues manage our law enforcement.”
A video of the encounter captures, at one point, a person behind the door asking if they could use the restroom. Someone inside replied, “No, I can’t!” Following this, Noem thanked the person and left.
Village officials noted that Noem arrived unexpectedly on Friday morning, hoping to meet with Mayor Katrina Thompson, who happened to be leaving the building at that moment.
They added, “When DHS Secretary Kristi Noem appeared this morning without warning, Mayor Katrina Thompson was leaving while seeking a meeting in the village hall.” It was mentioned that Mayor Thompson, accompanied by police, was asking to remove an illegal fence when she was informed by an agent that the secretary was unavailable.
Despite the unfolding situation, DHS officials contended that the lack of access was unrelated to the meeting. Tricia McLaughlin, the DHS communications secretary, commented, “She didn’t ask for a meeting. She asked to use the restroom. This is absurd.”
This bathroom disagreement coincided with tensions outside the ICE processing facility in Broadview, where agents were recorded using pepper balls, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse a crowd that was obstructing federal operations.
Earlier that day, Governor Pritzker accused Noem of enforcing federal tactics that he claimed violated the rights of Illinois residents and harmed his family. He asserted that she should “never step into Illinois without facing public accountability again.”
In response, McLaughlin defended the DHS and criticized Pritzker for inadequately protecting Illinois citizens from crime.
She stated, “Grow up and start protecting people in your own state. Federal law enforcement must be present, as JB Pritzker has allowed violent, illegal criminals to terrorize communities for years.”
The village of Broadview has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding this incident.
