Department of Justice announces over 1,000 major fraud enforcement actions
Since the creation of the National Fraud Enforcement Division, the Department of Justice has initiated more than 1,000 significant fraud enforcement actions across the nation. These coordinated efforts are aimed at safeguarding taxpayer money from schemes that exploit programs like Medicaid, SNAP, HUD, Social Security, and those managed by the SBA. The intention behind these federal programs is to support vulnerable populations, including the elderly, sick, and homeless.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has started a nationwide operation targeting illegal immigrants alleged to have fraudulently obtained benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), resulting in numerous arrests, as reported. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed the operation, highlighting several arrests of individuals accused of receiving SNAP benefits unlawfully.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that “illegal aliens who have no right to be here in the first place are the last people who should be using SNAP benefits and other forms of welfare.” He emphasized that these programs are “for Americans only,” and noted that even non-violent crimes by illegal immigrants can have serious consequences, particularly when they defraud American taxpayers.
Mullin mentioned that those who have been apprehended so far represent only “a drop in the bucket,” assuring that the administration would persist in pursuing individuals involved in fraud against these programs. The DHS identified several illegal immigrants implicated in SNAP fraud, including multiple individuals from Haiti.
Among those arrested was Rubstony Junior Theodore, a Haitian national living in the U.S. illegally. Authorities indicated that Theodore has a criminal background, which includes charges for larceny and obstruction of officers. Additionally, three other Haitian nationals were arrested: Wilbert Jean Baptiste, Louis Jean, and Jhensly Charles.
Another significant arrest was that of Elizabeth Povea Rodriguez, a Cuban national who also resided illegally in the U.S. She has prior convictions for disorderly conduct and has faced charges related to battery and domestic violence, according to federal officials.
The DHS declared that these arrests signal the beginning of an extensive ICE operation specifically targeting illegal immigrants who have fraudulently accessed SNAP benefits meant for American citizens in need. The agency noted that every individual apprehended had unlawfully entered the country and subsequently tapped into a program designed to assist struggling American families, sometimes while having criminal records.
It’s generally prohibited for immigrants living illegally in the U.S. to receive SNAP benefits, although some lawfully present noncitizens may qualify. The DHS stated that the Trump administration intends to continue addressing alleged SNAP fraud as part of a wider effort to combat the misuse of federal benefits.
