TSA Employees Receive Back Pay After Prolonged Government Shutdown

Most employees of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are getting back pay after their salaries were halted for weeks during the longest partial government shutdown in U.S. history.

“Many TSA workers received retroactive pay today, including two full paychecks for the current pay periods,” said Lauren Biss, who is acting as the assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

She also mentioned that some staff might face delays in receiving their payments, which could be due to various factors, like processing times at financial institutions or direct deposit issues.

Recently, President Donald Trump issued a memorandum directing funds to be allocated for TSA employee salaries. This was seen as a critical move amid the ongoing shutdown, which has stretched into its sixth week.

“America’s air travel system is at a breaking point due to this unprecedented emergency,” Trump stated. He instructed the Secretary of Homeland Security to allocate funds related to TSA operations to compensate employees affected by the shutdown.

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) TSA Council 100, representing TSA personnel, expressed concern over some workers receiving incorrect pay amounts due to missed overtime or tax issues. They also raised questions about furlough status and its implications.

“While our members appreciate receiving some back pay, many have faced escalating bills and financial difficulties because of this shutdown,” AFGE TSA Council of 100 President Heidrick Thomas noted. He added that over 500 employees have had to resign, facing disciplinary measures for missing work is a serious concern. Back pay alone isn’t a long-term solution, especially as other DHS workers remain unpaid.

Congress has consistently struggled to pass funding for the DHS, with disagreements arising largely along party lines. Democrats have stated their refusal to support funding bills until changes are made to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt commented on this predicament. “Democrats have failed to defund the Department of Homeland Security effectively, which has led to this ongoing crisis,” she said.

She also acknowledged the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Mullin in ensuring that TSA employees, who have worked without pay during the shutdown, can finally receive their compensations.
