Actor Leonardo DiCaprio accepted the Desert Palm Achievement Award virtually on Saturday, as he was unable to travel due to recent U.S. military actions in Venezuela.
DiCaprio was slated to be honored at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for his performance in “One Battle After Another.” However, because he was in St. Barts celebrating New Year’s, he had to accept the award remotely.
Early Saturday morning, U.S. forces conducted a significant operation in Venezuela, leading to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, as confirmed by President Trump.
A representative for the festival explained, “Due to unforeseen travel disruptions and airspace restrictions, Leonardo DiCaprio will be unable to join us in person tonight. While it’s disappointing that we can’t celebrate with him here, we’re delighted to acknowledge his significant contributions to the film world. His dedication continues to inspire many.”
The Palm Springs International Film Festival didn’t respond to requests for comments, but Variety shared a video of DiCaprio’s acceptance speech. He noted that “Movies are still a collective experience in the theater, and now, more than ever, that belief feels vital. Original films, while challenging to produce and protect, are still essential. It’s about the story that was crafted in a dark room meant for sharing as a communal experience.”
Meanwhile, the Palm Springs International Airport announced that outgoing flights were grounded due to air traffic control issues impacting Southern California airspace.
Maduro and his wife are expected to arrive in Brooklyn on Sunday to address charges related to narco-terrorism and weapons.
President Trump also mentioned that the U.S. would oversee Venezuela until a new leader is identified and power can transition safely and prudently. He emphasized the importance of preventing the country from falling into the wrong hands.
