Did the gathering choose a progressive to be the new pope?

The Vatican Conclave has elected Cardinal Robert Prevost from Chicago as the new Pope.

While many are thrilled about the selection of an American Pope, some express concerns about his political leanings, particularly given his previous criticisms of Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric.

His stance became apparent when he shared an article in an American magazine, discussing Pope Francis’ letter to U.S. bishops on immigration and mass deportation.

The article highlights a letter from Pope Francis that criticizes J.D. Vance’s interpretation of a theological concept he used in discussing immigration.

“It seems they could have chosen more conservative figures, but they decided to pick someone with a different political view,” stated Sarah Gonzalez, who implied that Prevost’s selection indicates a shift in direction.

Matthew Marsden, a contributor, added that they might have expected a more typical liberal Pope, reflecting the demographic shift in Catholic congregations in the U.S. He remarked, “Most attendees at Catholic churches nowadays are Hispanic, so this makes sense.” He also expressed hope that this new American Pope would be seen as a victory.
