Former Super Bowl champion Derek Wolf knows a thing or two about the NFL, and he believes there’s something very fishy going on within the league.
“My rookie year, 2012, we had Peyton Manning and we lost in the playoffs to the Baltimore Ravens,” Wolf said. Alex Stein “Prime Time with Alex Stein”.
“The reason they were able to even the score again was because of a pass interference call by the refs, which could have been called by either side at any time. There’s a penalty on every play, so it all depends on when the refs make the call,” Wolf explained.
The NFL is a business at the end of the day, and Wolf believes part of the NFL’s strategy is “who brings in the most money” and “the story.”
This year’s story was the love story between Travis Kelcy and Taylor Swift.
“The Chiefs weren’t that great a team. They lost to the Broncos this year so they weren’t at their best. They played really well in the playoffs but a lot of things were working in the Chiefs’ favor,” Wolf said.
“The X-factor there is the Swifties, and they’re bringing a whole new market to the NFL,” he continues. “People who would never watch football are now watching football, and they’re getting the ratings, because the money is in the ratings.”
Many people believe that the NFL’s revenue comes from ticket sales, but that’s simply not true.
“Our salary comes from our TV contracts,” Wolf said.
“Was there a game in particular that you felt totally ripped off?” Stein asks, intrigued.
“That was a playoff game in 2012,” Wolf responded, telling Stein that he thought the game was rigged so that Ray Lewis “would walk away as a champion.”
“Cotton, that’s a bold statement,” Stein said, exasperated, before adding, “It makes me happy to hear it, because everybody thinks it’s real, but this is sports entertainment.”
