Baltimore Ravens Sign Quarterback Diego Pavia
The Baltimore Ravens have given undrafted quarterback Diego Pavia a chance to compete for a spot on the team by signing him to a contract. Coach Jesse Minter expressed confidence in Pavia, suggesting he is poised to claim the final roster spot by the end of summer.
“So now he’s in the door and he’s like, ‘Let me show you what you can do,'” Minter said during a Saturday press conference. Pavia is expected to be in the running for the No. 3 position on the quarterback depth chart, alongside former University Huskies quarterback Joe Fagnano. Currently, Lamar Jackson holds the starting quarterback role, with Tyler Huntley as his backup.
Last season, Pavia, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, threw for 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns, helping the Commodores finish with a 10-3 record and come close to qualifying for the College Football Playoff.
Pavia, notably a Heisman Trophy finalist, finished second in the voting, losing out to Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, the eventual top draft pick. While he was initially upset with the voting outcome, he later apologized for his remarks on social media.
“(Pavia) has had some experiences that are learning experiences that he can learn from and potentially get better at. I don’t think anyone would argue with that,” Minter added. “But when you talk about the people in that building and him as a player, you know he shows up early every day and works hard.”
