Dillon Brooks charged with reckless driving weeks before DUI arrest

Just a few weeks before Dillon Brooks faced DUI charges earlier this month, Arizona law enforcement had raised concerns regarding his driving behavior.

An incident report acquired revealed that Scottsdale Police pulled over Brooks on January 12 due to his risky driving in a high-traffic area bustling with pedestrians, prompting fears about a potential “serious collision.”

At the time, Brooks was clocked at 85 mph in a 45 mph zone while driving a 2019 Rolls-Royce Wraith. This drastic speed increase heightened officers’ worries about the threat of a serious crash or a pedestrian being hit.

The officer noted in the report that “several businesses in the area were open,” and emphasized that an accident at such a speed could result in multiple fatalities or severe injuries.

Body camera footage from the incident shows Brooks asking the officer, “Can you please pull over for speeding?” after being stopped just after midnight.

The officer obliged and, after checking his information, charged Brooks with reckless driving before releasing him.

At 30 years old, Brooks is now facing two misdemeanor charges: one for reckless driving and another for exceeding the speed limit by 20 mph. He is set to appear in court in early April based on court documents.

On March 6, about seven weeks after the January incident, Brooks was arrested again by Scottsdale officers, this time for allegedly driving under the influence.

Body camera footage from the DUI stop recorded an officer commenting on how Brooks’ car “smelled like a pharmacy” before he was taken into custody.

Scottsdale police indicated that whether Brooks would face further criminal charges is a decision for the City Attorney’s Office.

This season, Brooks has participated in 50 games with the Suns but has been out of action since late February due to a broken hand.

A representative for Brooks did not provide immediate comments when reached out to on Tuesday.
