Heartbroken Rute Cardoso Speaks Out After Diogo Jota’s Tragic Death

Rute Cardoso has expressed her grief following the passing of her husband, Liverpool football star Diogo Jota.

In a touching Instagram post, the mother of three shared her sorrow over the loss of her partner, who was a forward for Portugal, after their wedding on June 22nd.

“I wrote in Portuguese, sharing moments from our wedding reception for our month of ‘Death Doesn’t Separate Us.’ Forever, Tua Branquinha,” she wrote, accompanied by photos of the couple celebrating their marriage.

Another photo depicted Cardoso and Jota clasping hands during their wedding.

The couple had been together for a decade, making the loss all the more poignant. Jota was confirmed to have died, alongside his brother, Andre Silva, after a tragic car accident in Spain when Jota’s Lamborghini veered off the road and caught fire. Jota was just 28 years old, while Silva was 26.

“Liverpool Football Club is heartbroken by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” the club stated on July 3rd, adding, “We ask for the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff during this difficult time.”

Details of the crash found that the Lamborghini’s tires appeared to have burst, but it’s unclear who was driving at the time.

The incident took place mere weeks after Jota married Cardoso, who shared their joyful day with their young children, including a daughter born in November 2024.

In a final Instagram post on July 2nd, Jota reminisced about that unforgettable day with Cardoso.

Jota, a prominent presence for Liverpool, scored 65 goals in 182 matches and contributed to the team’s success in last year’s Premier League. He also played 49 times for the Portuguese national team, netting 14 goals and securing the UEFA Nations League title twice.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020.
