Discontented American Airlines staff reveal issues with ‘terrible’ lounges

Frequent travelers are not just annoyed by subpar airport amenities.

Whistleblowers in the aviation industry have raised concerns about the poor conditions of American Airlines crew lounges, highlighting issues like broken furniture, inadequate bathrooms, and even bedbugs. A recent exposé by @Jonnyc shared various complaints from crew members about these facilities.

Typically, crew accommodations should include quiet spaces with recliners where flight attendants and pilots can rest between shifts. However, reports indicate that many American Airlines crew lounges are in disrepair. One unnamed crew member described the lounge at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (DFW) as “deepish,” a term that doesn’t sound too reassuring.

In a post, @Jonnyc mentioned, “A bedbug found in a recliner in the C7 room!” expressing relief that it had been spotted. It’s a strange world when you’re thankful someone noticed a pest.

Photos shared showed not just the insects but also chairs that had seen better days, with worn-out cushions. A user pointed out the deplorable situation, emphasizing that “the pilots use these rooms too.”

Bathrooms seem to be another serious issue. Whistleblowers mentioned that many are often out of service, forcing crew members to use the terminal facilities. Complaints included pictures showing forlorn spaces, complete with stained tiles and rusty sinks reminiscent of horror film sets.

Respected voices in the aviation sector have taken note of these troubling reports. One expert noted, “I don’t expect crew rooms to match up to luxury hotel standards, but I think we can do better than what’s been shown.” He stressed that the state of the lounges poses health and safety risks, particularly the bedbug problem.

Previously, passengers on some Turkish flights reported discovering bedbugs, although the airline denied such claims. Meanwhile, the chaotic condition of American Airlines lounges has been blamed on the frugality of CEO Robert Isom, who in 2022 emphasized, “We can’t spend more than we have to.”

Interestingly, American Airlines did respond, stating that the photos do not accurately reflect the conditions and claiming that they are actively working to improve them. They mentioned ongoing renovation plans for several of these lounges.
