Valentino Garavani: A Celebration of His Legacy
Valentino Garavani passed away on Monday at 93, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the fashion world. He spent decades designing for icons like Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Anne Hathaway, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Known as a maestro of red carpet fashion, Valentino showcased his talent through stunning gowns for prestigious events such as the Academy Awards and the Met Gala. He also created exquisite wedding dresses for some of the most renowned women globally.
One of Valentino’s trademarks was Valentino Red, a vibrant hue he introduced in his first collection back in 1959. This striking red became so well-known that Pantone even created an official shade to represent it.
Garavani once mentioned that Hathaway truly embodied the spirit of his designs. In a surprising move, he came out of retirement in 2012 to craft a custom wedding gown for her—a breathtaking ivory silk tulle piece with a hand-painted pink train.
Since Garavani’s retirement in 2008, several creative directors have taken the helm of the brand, yet Hathaway has remained a loyal supporter. Recently, she donned a red dress from his fall 2003 haute couture collection at a WWD event, and previously wore a stunning 2002 gown at the Oscars in 2011.
Paltrow’s connection to Valentino’s history is evident as well. At the 2019 Emmy Awards, she wore a 1963 gown featuring extravagant organza sleeves. Her stylist, Elizabeth Saltzman, described it as a delightful way to revisit cherished pieces while honoring a great friend. Plus, it certainly made Paltrow look like a million bucks!
