Fall is just around the corner, officially kicking off on Monday, September 22nd at 2:19 PM EST. New York is gearing up for a vibrant display of reds, oranges, and golds.
Whether you’re off to Hudson, cozying up in a cabin in the Catskills, or enjoying a leisurely walk in Central Park, the beauty of the season will come and go before you realize it.
Dylan Debruyn, a senior weather producer and meteorologist at Fox Weather, emphasizes the importance of timing if you plan to experience the fall foliage in the Tri-State area.
New York City typically sees its peak colors in early November, but ironically, that’s not when most visitors flock to see them.
“The city’s location along the warm coastline means a slower change in autumn colors compared to northern New York,” Debruyn mentioned.
In contrast, areas upstate, like the Catskills and Poconos, enjoy their vibrant hues from early to mid-October, with some colors already making an appearance, he noted.
He recommends keeping an eye on the weather. Heavy wind and rain can make leaves fall prematurely, while clear skies enhance their colors. If you can, aim for visits during the week to avoid the crowds.
From city parks to mountain vistas, here’s how to grab your flannel and savor this season’s stunning displays.
Take a Hike!
Beauty can be found right in the city, from parks to nature reserves, which serve as the lungs of Gotham. Even Brooklyn hides a forest; Prospect Park is home to the Valley, which offers shaded trails, bubbling streams, and waterfalls. It’s an ideal fall hike without needing a Metro North ticket. To explore the Wild Side of Brooklyn, head to Prospect Park West and 15th Avenue.
If you want a scenic urban walk along with leaf-peeping, try the newly renovated Northwalk at the George Washington Bridge. This former 1.5-mile sidewalk has transformed into a bright path for pedestrians and cyclists alike, boasting spectacular views of the Hudson, the bridge, and the city.
On the other side, Palisades Interstate Park offers 30 miles of trails ranging from serene river walks to rugged scrambles. It feels like a world away while still being just a stone’s throw from the city’s chaos.

If you’d like to mix leaf-gazing with a bit of beer, the Bear Mountain Cruise departs from Pier 83 in Midtown and takes a festive journey up the Hudson. Grab a classic German meal and enjoy live music, all while admiring the autumn leaves before you dock at Bear Mountain State Park for hours of hiking and picnicking.

Long before the Catskills regained popularity, Connecticut’s enchanting Litchfield Hills captivated visitors with its serene beauty. Whether you’re biking around Lake Bantam or hiking in the White Memorial Conservation Center, the vibrant autumn scenery is a feast for the senses.
Take your time to relish local treats at cozy bakeries and cafes. It’s a straightforward day trip from most Tri-State locations with plenty of comfortable hotels and charming B&Bs.

Embark on a picturesque journey on the Delaware and Ulster Railway, offering a scenic ride through fiery autumn landscapes. The themed excursions, including “Train Robbers,” add a fun twist to your journey.
