Discover the Unknown Billionaire Supporting U.S. Troops Amid Government Shutdown

Timothy Mellon: A Billionaire with a Low Profile

Timothy Mellon stands apart from other billionaires. If he’s not on your radar, that might be because he seldom makes headlines—except for his wedding announcement back in 1963. Unlike many of his wealthy peers who reside in Jackson Hole, his home is in Saratoga, Wyoming, a quaint town with just 1,760 residents.

Despite his reclusive nature, Mellon is deemed by Vanity Fair as the most “important mega donor” for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

In the midst of a government shutdown, former President Donald Trump mentioned that a substantial $130 million had been donated to support the U.S. military, but he refrained from naming the contributor, describing them only as a “patriot” and friend. Later reports revealed the donor to be Timothy Mellon, who is also the grandson of Andrew W. Mellon, a former Treasury Secretary.

Mellon, now 83, is often depicted in the media as a reclusive figure, with many articles featuring the same photo from 1981. Although he rarely gives interviews, his family has occasionally shared insights about his character and political contributions.

People who know Mellon often describe him as somewhat “socially awkward,” with a distinct style, including old aviator glasses held together with tape, as reported by Vanity Fair.

Interestingly, despite being well-off and advanced in age, Mellon has only recently ramped up his political donations. He had previously contributed thousands to the campaigns of George W. Bush and John McCain, and he notably donated $1.5 million in 2010 to back former Arizona Governor Janice Brewer’s immigration policies.

Unlike many of his fellow donors, Mellon seems disinterested in personal meetings, opting instead to communicate by fax.

According to records from the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Mellon supported several candidates, including Dr. Ben Carson, Donald Trump, and the Republican National Committee during the 2016 election cycle. Interestingly, in 2018 he donated to both Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Tulsi Gabbard, who was running for president at the time.

In April, he contributed nearly $2 million to MAGA Inc., a super PAC backing Trump.

Over the years, reports indicate that Mellon’s political stance appears to have shifted noticeably to the right. His nephew, John W. Warner IV, relayed in 2024 that Mellon was once quite fascinated with figures like Rush Limbaugh, which caused some friction within the family.

Mellon reportedly divides his time between Wyoming and Connecticut, having moved from the latter mostly for tax benefits and a quieter lifestyle.

Although he prefers to keep a low profile, he does attract attention. For instance, in 2024, he put up a large billboard near the Colorado border warning travelers that they were entering “Venezuela,” in a tongue-in-cheek commentary about a local apartment complex rumored to be associated with Venezuelan gang members.

On a different note, Mellon has a well-documented passion for Amelia Earhart. Back in 2012, he donated more than $1 million in stock to aid in the search for Earhart’s plane. He later claimed to have discovered video evidence of her wreckage, leading him to sue the recovery organization for fraud, although the lawsuit was dismissed after two years.

In a brief phone interview with the New York Times in 2020, Mellon remarked on his support for Trump, saying, “I don’t have to give you a reason.”
