Shifting Focus on Family in Video Games

For many years, video games have tended to overlook family dynamics, often relegating family members to mere background characters or presenting tragic stories involving parents’ deaths or disappearances. However, it seems that this narrative trend is beginning to evolve.

Recently, there’s been buzz about a new video game that highlights parent-child relationships in a warm and touching manner. John Doyle, a presenter on Blaze TV, expressed that this approach could significantly influence a whole generation of women to reconsider having children.

On a recent episode of “The John Doyle Show,” he discussed a video game that’s attracting interest for its family-oriented themes and its appeal to maternal instincts among female gamers globally.

The game, titled Pragmata, is a sci-fi action-adventure from Capcom set to be released in 2026. Players take on the role of an astronaut named Hugh and his young android companion, Diana, as they battle rogue artificial intelligence and strive to escape a menacing lunar research facility.

Doyle pointed out that, aside from the gameplay elements, much of the game’s essence revolves around scenes that depict a nurturing relationship between a father and his daughter, which is often neglected in various forms of media.

In one clip from Pragmata, a tender moment unfolds as Hugh safeguards Diana while she plays with a globe at a children’s table filled with crayons and blocks. These moments are not merely filler; they focus on their bond rather than plot advancement.

Doyle emphasized that Pragmata beautifully illustrates the joy of nurturing a young life and the satisfaction that parents and guardians derive from assuming responsibility for another person.

This shift stands in stark contrast to how mainstream media tends to portray parenting, usually focusing on its more challenging aspects, such as sleepless nights, public tantrums, and various mishaps, as Doyle noted.

Yet, the question remains: can Pragmata truly address the ongoing fertility challenges? Doyle expressed skepticism that media alone can awaken a widespread appreciation for parenthood. However, he believes it might subtly influence those already considering starting families.

He argues that individuals who embrace parenthood play a vital role in sustaining what he calls “civilization.” After all, “civilization thrives through intelligent, stable individuals who possess the temperament to guide societies,” Doyle remarked.

While it’s unlikely that a video game will directly inspire many to have children, its overall emotional resonance may indeed contribute to a broader cultural movement surrounding parenthood.

Doyle concluded by stating that simply sharing pictures of adorable babies won’t necessarily lift national birth rates, but the vibe around such experiences is certainly palpable among people.
