Disney Announces Job Cuts for a Technology-Enabled Workforce
In a recent announcement, Disney revealed that they are cutting around 1,000 jobs to create a “more technology-enabled workforce,” as Hollywood faces ongoing reductions.
Josh D’Amaro, the new CEO, indicated in a memo to staff that these layoffs serve as a means of both cost-cutting and increasing efficiency. He emphasized the need to refine operations across various departments to uphold the creativity and innovation that fans expect from Disney. D’Amaro noted, “Given the rapid changes in our industry, we must constantly evaluate how to develop a more agile, technology-enabled workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs,” which is why some roles are being eliminated.
The job cuts will affect a variety of departments, including Hulu, FX, ESPN, ABC News, Marvel, as well as corporate areas like finance and technology. D’Amaro clarified that these layoffs reflect ongoing assessments of resource management and are not a judgment on the work quality of those affected. He has promised to aid individuals “transitioning” out of the company with resources and support.
This news came just after rival Sony Pictures Entertainment announced its own job cuts, which will also number in the hundreds across TV, film, and corporate offices. Sony characterized its approach as “targeted and strategic” rather than primarily cost-driven, focusing on future growth in areas like anime, YouTube, and gaming.
The layoffs at both Disney and Sony reflect broader trends in Hollywood, which has seen significant downsizing. Recent reports highlighted a 30% decrease in film production jobs in the last two years, with film-related opportunities in Los Angeles County dropping from 142,000 to just 100,000. This decline is compounded by a staggering 48% drop in theater attendance.
Additionally, commentary from the Wall Street Journal remarked that Hollywood’s struggles could lead to a situation akin to the decline of Detroit’s auto industry, portraying the industry’s current crisis as an “ongoing nightmare scenario.” It’s hard to imagine a quick recovery from this turmoil.
