A Disney-themed dance party takes an unexpected turn when a giant photo of United Healthcare shooter Luigi Mangione appears on the screen as the Hannah Montana song “He Could Be The One” plays. Welcoming.
The event, held in Boston on Friday, featured attendees partying under a slideshow of photos of Mangione, who was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. It was caught on video and sparked a backlash.
Video of the bizarre tribute shows revelers cheering as a photo is flashed behind the DJ.
The hit teen bop song “He Could Be The One” sung by Miley Cyrus' popular Disney Channel character Hannah Montana plays in the background.
The DJ then says to the enthusiastic crowd: “We have to give people what they want,” the video shows.
Online commentators slammed the event, which was paid for by Disney, as “terrible” and “highly inappropriate.”
Vanessa White, who filmed the video, told Storyful that “Disney Night” was performed by a DJ group called Bop to the Top, and is a song from the popular Disney Channel movie “High School Musical.” He said he was using it as a reference.
The group's website describes it as follows: The event will be held as a “DJ-led dance night with high-energy performances, crowd participation, and hero moments dancing on stage to create your favorite memories.”
This group does not appear to be affiliated with Disney.
Mr. Mangione was indicted on Tuesday on an upgraded murder charge for the killing of Mr. Thompson, 50, an act of terrorism.
A grand jury indicted Mangione, 26, on charges of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder for the cold-blooded killing of a health insurance executive outside the Midtown Hilton on Dec. 4.
