Disputes arise in the White House over the consequences of the Minnesota shootings

The situation in Minnesota regarding immigration enforcement has triggered a blame game among officials. Everyone seems eager to deflect accountability.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has claimed that her disputed decision to label two Minneapolis residents killed by federal immigration agents as “domestic terrorists” was influenced by Stephen Miller.

In turn, Miller, who serves as Deputy Chief of Staff, pointed the finger at Border Patrol agents, suggesting they might not have adhered to established procedures during the killing of Alex Preti.

He also indicated that his remarks stemmed from information he received from Customs and Border Protection officials in Minneapolis.

President Trump has backed his officials and criticized two Republican senators who called for Noem’s dismissal. Meanwhile, Democrats are pushing for Miller to be removed from his position.

The White House has maintained that the team is united. Press Secretary Abigail Jackson stated, “The president’s entire immigration enforcement team is on the same page, working seamlessly together to implement the president’s policies, protect Americans, and deport criminal illegal aliens.”

Supporters of the administration suggest that no one is facing immediate job loss, though it is unusual to see such internal disputes arise during a second term.

Former Trump campaign adviser David Urban noted that it’s interesting to see such disagreements, as prior to this incident, there had generally been consensus and camaraderie among the team.

In the meantime, Attorney General Pam Bondi visited Minnesota to assist Border Protection Secretary Tom Homan. While Homan held discussions with state leaders, Bondi defended federal agents and arrested protesters.

“Federal agents have arrested 16 Minnesota rioters on suspicion of assaulting federal law enforcement,” she wrote on social media, indicating that more arrests could follow.

Two federal agents connected to Preti’s shooting are currently on administrative leave as investigations unfold. Another investigator involved in the earlier shooting of activist Renee Goode is also on leave.

Miller acknowledged that the Border Patrol agents may not have followed the proper protocol in Preti’s case. He mentioned that the White House had provided clear guidance regarding the situation.

Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for Homeland Security, condemned the disorder at the scene. She emphasized that they are waiting for the investigation to advance before making further comments.

Noem reportedly expressed that her decisions were directed by both the president and Miller.

There was a two-hour meeting with Homeland Security secretaries in the Oval Office, shortly after President Trump announced a replacement for Homan in relation to the Minnesota events. A senior administration official downplayed the significance of this meeting.

Trump has expressed confidence in Noem, acknowledging her capability, especially in matters of border security.

Miller appears to remain secure in his position as one of Trump’s longest-serving aides. Press secretary Caroline Leavitt noted that Miller remains highly trusted within the administration.

Democrats urge for Miller’s and Noem’s removal. New York State Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Noem’s competency and called for her and Miller to be dismissed.

Some Republican senators have also questioned Noem’s qualifications. Both Senators Murkowski and Tillis have called for her resignation, with Tillis labeling her Minnesota actions as unprofessional.

Murkowski agreed that Noem should step down.

Interestingly, both senators had supported Noem’s confirmation last year but seem to feel free of immediate political backlash for their current stance.

Trump responded strongly to their criticism, labeling them “losers” and questioning their Republican loyalty.

Tillis brushed off Trump’s comments, jokingly asserting his newfound role as Secretary of Homeland Security.
