Violent Incident in Connecticut Leads to Deaths
Disturbing body camera footage reveals a shocking incident in Connecticut where a man brutally attacked his father with a baseball bat outside their home during the day, resulting in police shooting the attacker.
The assailant, identified as 38-year-old Robert Jenkins III, was seen violently striking his 69-year-old father, Robert Jenkins Jr., with the bat in the front yard of their Meriden residence on a Sunday morning, according to reports.
Officer Anthony Offieri was the first responder and commanded Jenkins to “put down the bat,” but Jenkins ignored the order and continued his assault, as captured in the footage.
“When Officer Offieri arrived, Jenkins III was hitting a man lying motionless on the lawn with a baseball bat,” Connecticut State Inspector General Elliott Prescott stated in an initial report.
Despite being ordered to drop the bat multiple times, Jenkins III persisted in striking his father.
The situation escalated further when Officer Offieri fired multiple shots at Jenkins III, who eventually dropped the bat and fell to the ground.
In total, Officer Offieri discharged at least 18 bullets. Jenkins III succumbed to his injuries later that day, with the cause of death determined to be “multiple gunshot wounds to the torso,” classified as a homicide.
Meanwhile, Robert Jenkins Jr. died from “blunt force head trauma,” and his death was also ruled a homicide.
It’s not clear whether Officer Offieri has been placed on administrative leave, a common practice for officers involved in fatal incidents pending investigations.
Residents expressed their shock at the violence in an otherwise quiet neighborhood located between New Haven and Hartford. One neighbor remarked that while they didn’t know the family well, they seemed polite and sociable in public.
Additionally, another local resident noted that Jenkins III had shown violent tendencies in the past, suggesting that he might have needed help before the situation escalated to such a tragic outcome.
