Multiple Republican lawmakers are raising concerns following another mass shooting incident in Minnesota.
On Saturday in Minneapolis, federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security shot and killed anti-ICE activist Alex Preti. Authorities stated that Preti “violently resisted” efforts to disarm him. This marks the second fatal shooting of an anti-ICE activist in the state, as earlier this month, Renee Goode was shot after accelerating her vehicle towards an agent.
Administration officials, including DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and Chief Counsel Stephen Miller, have remarked on the matter, labeling such actions as domestic terrorism.
This shooting follows weeks of violence, theft, and property damage linked to protests against ICE’s presence in Minneapolis. These protests are often described as coordinated attacks targeting federal agencies conducting legal operations. There have also been threats against journalists exposing violent tactics and intimidation directed at local church members.
As the investigation unfolds, some Republican senators and representatives are attempting to distance themselves from what they view as a “horrific situation.”
Several senators who typically oppose the Trump administration have issued critical comments after the shooting, contesting the Department of Homeland Security’s claims.
Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska described the situation as shocking. She expressed that the deadly encounter with Preti should prompt serious reflection within the administration regarding the training and directive given to immigration enforcement agents. Murkowski emphasized that possessing a firearm does not justify federal agents taking lethal action, especially when the victim appears to be disarmed, as video evidence suggests. She called for an independent investigation to restore trust and urged Congressional oversight.
Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who is approaching retirement, warned against rushing to conclusions, which he believes could damage President Trump’s legacy. He insisted on the need for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the shooting, stressing that this is a fundamental expectation following such incidents.
Other Republican senators have conveyed skepticism about the shooting’s circumstances. Sen. Pete Ricketts of Nebraska acknowledged the gravity of the situation and sent his prayers to Preti’s family while reaffirming his ongoing support for ICE funding. He noted the importance of upholding national core values, such as the right to protest, and expressed his anticipation for a transparent investigation.
Republican Sen. Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania also echoed critiques from his party, defending Preti’s right to legally possess a firearm. He stated that irresponsible rhetoric from Minnesota officials is contributing to a perilous environment and that a thorough investigation is essential to ensure the enforcement of laws that also protect public trust.
The viewpoints vary among Republicans, with some, like Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, defending the Trump administration and indicating that protesters may have overstepped bounds, obstructing law enforcement.
