Democratic National Committee Chair Weighs in on Mamdani’s Stance

Ken Martin, the chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), has brushed aside worries regarding NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s hesitance to explicitly denounce a controversial slogan. Mamdani faced criticism after his unexpected victory in the democratic primary against New York City Mayor Andrew Cuomo, largely due to his reluctance to disavow the phrase associated with the Palestinian uprising against Israel. The phrase “Globalization of Intifadas” has emerged as a rallying cry among US anti-Israel demonstrators since the Hamas attacks that began on October 7, 2023, targeting countless innocent Israelis.

“No candidate is going to agree with you all the time,” Martin noted. “Honestly, I sometimes find myself at odds with Mamdani’s views.” Despite this, he emphasized his belief in the necessity of winning broad support, maintaining that the DNC has thrived on inclusion for over 14 years.

Calls for Clarification from Top Democrats

Amidst the escalating debate, influential Democrats and media figures have urged Mamdani to clarify his stance on the term “intifada globalization.” In a prior podcast, Mamdani described the slogan as a reflection of a “desperate desire for equality” pertaining to Palestinian human rights. However, when pressed again on Meet the Press, he chose not to explicitly condemn it.

“Our coalition includes varying perspectives,” Martin stated, alluding to the need for a big-tent approach within the party. While acknowledging differences can spark debate, he suggested that these should be viewed as opportunities for the party to advance.

Mamdani Responds to Criticism

Mamdani, in a conversation with NBC’s Kristen Welker, reiterated that the language he prefers doesn’t align with the controversial slogan. “I speak clearly about my intentions,” he said, framing his approach through the lens of universal human rights. When asked whether he condemns the slogan amid accusations of it inciting violence, he conveyed the importance of addressing concerns around anti-Semitism without losing sight of broader civil rights issues.

“We need to assert that there’s no place for anti-Semitism in our city,” Mamdani asserted. He suggested that combating bias requires action, not just words.

Following more attempts to get a straightforward answer regarding the slogan, Mamdani emphasized his focus on establishing a more nuanced conversation around acceptable terminology. “I don’t want to get caught up in labeling language as good or bad,” he explained. “Ultimately, my goal is to express my vision for this city through both dialogue and action.”
