Democratic Party Chair Criticizes Hasan Piker
Ken Martin, the chair of the Democratic National Committee, has distanced the party from controversial streamer Hasan Piker, labeling his previous comments as “disgusting and deplorable.” Martin emphasized that Piker does not represent the Democratic Party or its candidates.
In a statement, Martin expressed his disapproval of Piker’s remarks, saying, “I think it’s absolutely disgusting and deplorable the things that Hasan Piker has said. But he does not represent the Democratic Party and he certainly doesn’t represent the viewpoints of almost every one of our candidates and our elected officials.”
These comments came after inquiries about how the Democratic Party is managing internal divisions as more leftist candidates, like Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee from Michigan, gain visibility.
Controversial Remarks and Party Unity
Martin remarked on the party’s diversity of views, mentioning, “No one should confuse unity with unanimity in the Democratic Party. We are a big tent party with lots of different viewpoints and ideas.”
Piker has faced criticism for his strong statements against Israel, including the contentious claim that the U.S. “deserved 9/11.” Martin had previously condemned rhetoric that assigns blame to Jewish Americans for violence against them, emphasizing that it is “dangerous, wrong, and antisemitic,” although he did not directly mention Piker in that context.
El-Sayed, who once campaigned alongside Piker during the Democratic primary, is now trying to separate himself from the streamer as Republicans use this association against him in the run-up to the midterm elections.
Criticism of Republican Actions
Additionally, Martin criticized Republicans for cutting a legislative session short in September, just weeks ahead of the midterm elections. Speaker Mike Johnson had announced the early recess, insisting that the House had fulfilled its obligations. Martin questioned this decision, stating, “Republicans…they’re afraid to actually come to Washington for a whole host of reasons. They’ve recessed saying mission accomplished six weeks early when they could actually do something to help the American people.”
He also called out the lack of action from Republicans, saying, “Where the hell are the Republicans?” He expressed confidence that Democrats would retake control of both chambers in the upcoming elections, with only about six weeks until Americans vote.
As election day approaches, Martin declared, “Mark my words right here. You heard it here first. The Democratic Party is going to take control of the House back and we’re going to control the Senate back and we’re not going to screw around like these Republicans have.”
