Debt from Kamala Harris Campaign Still Burdens DNC

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is working its way through debts related to former Vice President Kamala Harris’ unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign.

Recently, they disbursed $1.6 million last month, raising their total payments to over $20 million so far. This information comes from Axios.

Harris’ campaign accumulated an extraordinary $1.5 billion in expenses during its short 107-day run. Nearly a year later, the DNC is still attempting to deal with this financial weight, though the exact remaining debt remains unclear.

Looking back, former President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election effort also left the DNC in a similar predicament, with over $20 million in lingering debts. Despite Obama’s substantial fundraising abilities, it took until 2015 for this debt to be fully repaid, leaving the party exposed leading up to the 2016 election when Hillary Clinton ultimately fell short against Donald Trump.

In August, it was disclosed that Harris had made a “handshake agreement” with the DNC to cover $20.5 million of unpaid campaign costs.

The debts span a wide array of expenses, including voting logistics, consultant fees, airline tickets, event production, and the hiring of celebrities like Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion.

In February, Harris communicated with Democratic supporters via email, indicating that donations would be utilized “to help us win the next election.” However, it turned out that about 20 cents of every dollar raised went toward clearing the outstanding campaign bills.

Interestingly, Harris’ post-election financial summary claimed there were “no outstanding debts or past due bills” at the time of last year’s election.
