DNC plans to host ‘virtual roll call’ to ensure Biden on Ohio ballot

The Democratic National Committee has put forward a proposal that, if implemented, would see Joe Biden appear on Ohio’s ballot this November.

For now, Ohio Democrats are in a bit of a pickle. As The Blaze reported last week, Ohio law requires political parties to certify their presidential and vice presidential candidates 90 days before Election Day. That means: August 7 This year, Biden and Kamala Harris are scheduled to be formally nominated at the Democratic National Convention on August 22nd.

“Through a virtual roll call, we will ensure that Republicans cannot chip away at our democracy with incompetence and partisan tactics.”

Similar deadline issues include Both political parties Ohio has had similar instances in the past, when state lawmakers passed stopgap legislation to ensure the right candidates would appear on the ballot on Election Day. This year, no such legislation is moving forward.

So the Democratic National Committee decided to step in, promising to host a “virtual roll call” to nominate Biden and Harris by the legal deadline of Aug. 7. The party also accused Republicans of preventing Ohio Democrats from formally nominating their chosen candidate in accordance with state election law.

“Joe Biden will be on the ballot in Ohio and all 50 states, and Ohio Republicans agree. But when it came time to act, they failed to act every single time, and Democrats are going to land the plane on their own,” said Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison. statement It was issued on Tuesday.

“Through a virtual roll call, we will ensure that Republicans cannot undermine our democracy with incompetence and partisan tactics and that Ohioans can exercise their right to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice.”

The Democratic National Convention held a similar virtual roll call in 2020 because of the government shutdown caused by the coronavirus. This year, party leaders plan to gather enough party members virtually for a formal certification vote, then hold a separate in-person vote at the convention.

A virtual roll call has not yet been scheduled, but it is expected to take place after June 4, when committee members are expected to meet and vote on amending the bylaws regarding roll calls.

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, a Republican, confirmed that a national roll call would satisfy state law on candidate certification, but claimed he had not yet received any formal notification from Democratic officials about a virtual roll call.

“We have not been contacted by the Democratic Party or its legal counsel regarding any reported planned modifications to the nominating process,” a spokesman for LaRose said. “Advancing the official vote at the convention to meet Ohio’s polling deadline is certainly one option my office has proposed for consideration. Another option would have been to temporarily adjust the certification deadline through legislative action. We are encouraged that the party is actively pursuing both solutions and look forward to seeing more details emerge.”

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine expressed relief that the voting issues will likely be resolved soon. But he also wants state lawmakers to hold a special session to find a more permanent solution to the deadline issue. “We don’t want to leave it to someone else to take on this fundamental issue of putting a sitting president of the United States on the ballot when we can and should do so legislatively,” he said.

He also argues that some individuals “may intend to inject foreign funds into voting measures this fall, and that groups promoting these efforts may be relying on foreign support,” and he has called on lawmakers to address issues surrounding foreign influence in state elections.

The state Democratic Party countered that foreign donations are already illegal.”[Republicans] “They’re using this as a cover to accomplish what they really want to attack, which is undermine the referendum process,” said Ohio House Minority Leader Allison Russo (D-Upper Arlington).
